Wewelsburg Castle - Himmler's Dream
History and Renovation of the Castle
Wewelsburg Castle is an early 17th-century castle in the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany. In 1934, SS leader Heinrich Himmler purchased it with the intent of transforming the place into an SS spiritual stronghold. The renovation projected by Himmler was multifaceted: the transformation of the castle into the ideological and ceremonial home center of the SS—what he termed an elite order of Aryan knights.
On orders from Himmler, radical architectural changes were made at the castle. One of the most striking items added was the "Hall of Generals" with an esoteric symbol, the Black Sun, inlaid on the floor. The renovations aimed to reflect the SS role in the foundation and the setting of Nazi Germany's racial ideology, as well as the enthronement of the SS as blood protectors of the Aryan race.
Himmler’s obsession with the occult and racial purity guided the changes in Wewelsburg. He believed that transforming the castle into an ideological headquarters for the SS would create a spiritual and racial connection to an imagined Aryan past. It included elaborate rituals, ceremonies, and architectural changes. They aimed to reflect the ideals of the SS as a paramilitary and esoteric order.
